Dear Friends:

So many of you have been so caring in asking about Marilyn's health. She has spent the time between early June and now in and out of the hospital for chemotherapy every other week.  The last MRI of her brain showed that she was ready to begin a new regimen of chemotherapy that will lead her to a stem cell transplant.

On Wednesday September 24, she will check in to the hospital in Burlington.  From what we understand, the actual stem cell process will continue for the next two months.  There will be times in the early part of this procedure that she will be able to spend a few days at home.

While this process will place great demands on Marilyn, we believe that if offers hope for the future.  We are thankful for your prayers on her behalf.

Last Sunday ,Lloyd Hoffner, #346, took a nasty fall at his home and broke his hip.  He was successfully operated on last Monday and is now recovering in ICU at Heart of Florida Hospital.

According to Dorothy he was sitting on the side of his bed today.  He will be transferred to the Lifecare Center by the weekend.  Many of you will recall that Lloyd spent most of his Spring at the Lifecare Center for rehabilitation after his first fall.

Lloyd is in good spirits and would enjoy hearing from his Carefree friends.

We would like to Thank All our neighbors and Friends at Carefree for all the Cards, calls and prayers we received during the illness and death of our Daughter Denise. She fought a long hard battle with ALS,  it has no cure. Your thoughtfulness has been appreciated very much and it shows what a fine and caring community Carefree is.

Thanks again

Dear Carefree friends,

I want you to know how much your cards and calls meant to me during these past several weeks.  They allowed me the pleasure of thinking about the many good times at Carefree rather than the period of recuperation that was to come.  The surgery went well, followed by three weeks of rehab, and then on to the ever present physical therapy.  I put the cane away last week and am now planning for our trip to Carefree where I will have the opportunity to thank you in person for your kind and thoughtful comments.

            Until then.

We have some sad news to pass on.  Our friend Bill Poston passed away last night at 9:50.  Bill had been fighting double pneumonia for the past three weeks.  He finally ran out of fight.  His son Michael called us with the following information:  The family would ask that any one wishing to make a donation, in lieu of flowers, please send it to the Bill Poston Library Fund which will be established at the:

   North Manchester Public Library
                   405 North Market Street
                   North Manchester, IN  46962

Michael also said that the local service would probably be on Friday of this week although final arrangements had not been made as of this morning.  We are truly saddened by the news.

Dear Carefree friends and neighbors,

I just want to thank all of you for your many prayers, cards and E's. I had my hip replacement surgery on June 26, and hit a bump in the road.  While installing the new hip, the bone around the ball joint was fractured, so now I have a plate and screws along with the hip ball.  It has set me back some, and I still have 4 weeks to go before I can put weight on the foot and follow up with therapy for the hip.  We're coming along fine, Dick is a great cook and is learning how the clean, wash, etc, that comes so naturally to us women.  The boys are here almost everyday, and the girls take turns coming from Baraboo to help out. What do they say? God doesn't give you any more than you can handle. Again, thank you for all your cards, e"s and prayers, keep the prayers coming, still have a lot of recovery to do.   God Bless.

There will be a service at the Church of Peace , 402 8th Avenue South , St. Cloud , Minnesota on August 1st at 10 AM. for Elly Chirhart.

We will have a get together at Lake Bess for all Elly's Carefree and Lake Bess friends in November when we get back to Florida .  No date has been set for that, but we will keep everyone posted.

Elly always thought flowers were wasted on funerals, so we encourage everyone to plant a flower for yourself in her memory.  She'd love it if they were all planted in Carefree yards.  She was Carefree's first beautification committee and she and Red Evans worked tirelessly planning, plotting and planting Carefree's beautiful flower beds.  Ken and Jean Flake expanded and planted even more areas in flowers, and many other volunteers with that same love of flowers have made Carefree the beautiful place it is.

We have been asked by many what kind of a memorial we plan in Elly's memory, and frankly we really haven't decided on anything yet, but  donations to that cause are welcome, or a donation to the Carefree Cancer Relay for Life, or the Audubon Society would be other ways to honor Elly's memory.

Thanks all our friends at Carefree for your many cards and good wishes for Elly in the past several months, for all of you who made her 98th birthday so special, and for those of you who have sent condolences to Duane and I.  We treasure your friendship and love always!

From Bev Chirhart

Duane's Mom, Elly, passed away on Saturday evening.  We got the news at my Dad's (Frank Farrington) 100th birthday party with 50 family members and 50 friends in attendance.  Some thought it was sad that we received the news of Elly's passing then, but we know Elly and know that she decided that if she couldn't be at Dad's birthday party in person, then she'd be there in spirit, and she was! It was very comforting to us to all be together there, and to be able to hug each other and cry with each other, and feel the love and support of so many dear friends too on such a sad occasion.  We had prayed for her peace and comfort and that she wouldn't have to be in the nursing home which she hated so.    She had a wonderful long life.  We celebrated her 98th birthday in February in Florida with over 100 friends and family too, and she loved it.  We can only say,  "Thank God for the gift of her life, and for the wonderful memories we will always hold in our hearts!"  We will have a celebration of her life sometime later this summer, but we're not sure when.  I will let you know!  Thanks all, for your kindnesses to Elly and to us, and for your prayers and support, as we get thru this loss.  We are grateful that the Lord took her home, but it's hard to imagine life without Elly!

We thank all of you so much for your cards, phone calls and e mails expressing your concerns for us during this difficult time in our lives.  Your prayers, kind words and support are appreciated more than we could ever put into words.  It is a privilege being a part of such an exceptional community where people really care about each other.

In a conversation with Nancy Cox last Wednesday, June 25, I learned that Jim Cox had a heart attack Sunday, June 22..Mild enough, if I understand correctly, that after consultation with his doctor, he drove himself to the hospital..

He had 80% blockage in one artery and a stent was placed in the artery.

He came home Tuesday, June 24

You can check the Carefree website to see the message Jim placed there prior to his heart attack concerning the two strokes Nancy suffered over a two-three week period prior to Jim's attack.  She has some bleeding in the brain which may be serious. They will know more about her condition after a doctor's consultation on Monday, June 30th. She was speaking clearly when I talked to her.

It has been a tough time for two wonderful people.

Dear Friends:

Marilyn received very good news this past Friday about the status of the three areas in her brain that have cancer cells.  From an MRI taken on Thursday, June 19, it was learned that one of the places has been eliminated, another has nearly disappeared, while the third area - the largest - has been reduced to one - third of it's size.

She will continue with chemotherapy for the next month.  This means four days in the hospital and ten days at home.  There will be another MRI when this month of treatment has been completed.

This is wonderful news and we are grateful for all of your thoughts and prayers.  The support of so many friends has been very helpful and is greatly appreciated by both of us.

Bernie

Dear Friends,

In early June Nancy was taken to North Memorial Hospital by ambulance because of stroke symptoms.  A CT and an MRI of the brain showed she had had a brain hemorrhage.  She did not have a stroke or a TIA nor did it have anything to do with an aneurysm.  There is a medical term for what happened to Nancy and it is very rare. It only occurs in two to three percent of the population.  Nine days later the same symptoms happened and off she went again.   Another CT and MRI showed no hemorrhage this time and Jim and Nancy were told the brain was trying to heal itself.

The good news is that Nancy is doing well but cannot drive for the time being.  The bad news is that this is a serious situation.   We have been told it will happen again and the neurologist has said there no way to treat it.  We would appreciate your prayers and your caring thoughts.  Thank you.

Dear Carefree Friends:

The treatment plan has changed since the last report was put in the Carefree Member News.  Her treatment plan now will span the next two months,  She will be in the hospital for 5 to 7 days and then return home for a week.  This process will be repeated 4 times.

This treatment started yesterday, May 27 in the hospital.  This treatment is focusing on the brain.  Other than feeling tired from the chemotherapy she is doing fine.

She wants to thank her Carefree friends for all the cards and well wishes and for your expressions of hope.

We will be in touch again.

Dear Carefree Friends:

Here is the present situation concerning Marilyn's struggle with lymphoma.

From her most recent MRI Marilyn learned last Friday, May 16 that the initial chemotherapy has reduced the size of the cancer in two of the three areas in her brain while the third area has grown.  A mixed message.

The plan of treatment for the next 4 months will be one week in the hospital for chemotherapy and three weeks at home.  The process will begin this coming Wednesday, May 21 when she enters the hospital.

She is feeling good at this point.  She sends  her thanks to all of you who have sent cards and letters and have offered prayers for her recovery,

Dear Friends,

I have sold my house and I will be moving May 15 to a senior's condominium apartment.  I have been working so hard trying to get rid of 24 years of "stuff", old photographic equipment, and some furniture.  Steve has been helping me but so far we haven't sold much.  I have an ad in the paper for a sale this weekend.  I have to be out of my house and everything gone by May 23.  I have to pay rent for the 10 days I am staying past the closing date (tomorrow).  I am worn out trying to do most of the packing myself.  I know I am bringing too many things and will have to "weed out" again after I move - otherwise I will have boxes piled to the ceiling.

My new address is:     Joan Lundgren

Please pray for strength and energy to survive this move.

Dear Friends:

As many of my Carefree friends know, I have been struggling with health concerns for the last few months.  This will provide you with an update on what is underway to treat my health problem.

I was diagnosed on April 24 with intravascular large b cell lymphoma.  This is a very rare form of lymphoma.

I have spent the past month in a hospital and nursing home.  I was discharged from the nursing home this past Tuesday, May 6.

I have started chemotherapy treatments - the first of which began on April 25.  The treatment plan is to have chemotherapy every 3rd week for approximately 3 months.

I thank you for your cards and your prayers for my recovery.
