Message for all AOL users

AOL has decided not to offer free McAfee anti-virus protection for its users.  If you wish to avoid the charge that they will be imposing shortly, carry out the following instructions.

Close down your McAfee anti-virus program.  You can usually do this by right clicking on the McAfee icon at the lower, right corner of your screen (known as the sys-tray, or notification area).  There should be a choice to exit the program in the pop-up menu.

Next, click on Start,  Control Panel,  Add or Remove Programs.

When the list is displayed, scroll down until you find the McAfee Anti-Virus program.  Click on Remove and go through any steps that complete the removal.

Click on Start again and then Search.  In the Search dialog box, type McAfee and choose to look in Local Disk (C:), and then click Search.  (There may be some files that are not removed when you remove the program.)

If your Search finds any related files, delete them. On completion, reboot the computer.

Now go to this website address:

http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-

Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html?

tag=mncol&cdlPid=1088027

Download and install this anti-virus program, which is free forever and can be updated free regularly.  I use this and I can recommend it.

Once it is installed, it's a good idea to configure it to run a scheduled anti-virus scan.  You can choose have it run daily at a set time, or any other interval that you prefer.

When you use your computer you may notice that the normal AVG icon in the sys-tray changes from a square with four colors to a red shield.  This means that there is a new update ready to download. (As you can imagine, new viruses are being discovered every day, so the update is a list of new virus definitions.) Right click on the icon and choose Update Now.  After that, wait for the message that shows you the update file, then click OK to install it.

That's all there is to it.  Your computer is now secure.

If you have any problems doing this, please let me know.  I could also connect remotely and do it for you if you wish.

Best wishes,

Carefree Computer Group Meetings

Hi everyone, Dave Clark here with some news about our 2008/9 Computer Group meetings.  The aim of the meetings is to inform you how you can maintain your computer so that it runs quickly and safely, as well as trying to answer all your questions.  If I get stuck with a Vista problem, I’m sure Bill Roach will help out and provide backup for me throughout the meetings.  If there are any Mac computer users, please don’t be afraid to come.  They are much simpler to operate than Windows computers!

I would like to hear from you in advance if there are any topics that you would particularly like me to address.  All the meetings will be fun if everyone participates and learns a little each time.  You can contact me at this e-mail address:

computergroup@carefreecountryclub.org

The meeting dates are as follows:

November 17

December 15

January 12

February 16

March 16

Looking forward to our first meeting!

Dave Clark
